Album Review: Bloodhunter-Sons of the Abandoned.

Melodic death metal act Bloodhunter are set to release their fourth album, Sons of the Abandoned, this Friday via ROAR (A division of Reigning Phoenix Music. The music is fresh, brutal and melodic, set against the backdrop of crushing riffs and hellacious grooves that stick in the memory long after. I am new to the band, but have covered them recently because I hear comparisons with bands like Lamb of God and Arch Enemy. Formed in Galicia, Spain, in 2008, the band have been a rising force in Europe, developing their sound and appearing at Festivals, alongside notable names like Rainbow and Megadeth. Fronted by Female vocalist Diva Satanica, they have released the diverse and personal "Sons of the Abandoned". The ten-track release explores themes of toxicity, identity, and inner demons in a disillusioned world.

My first thoughts on the album are how varied the music is. The long, melodic sections are full of emotion, while the intense, aggressive sounds of Satanica stand out. This album has been described as "Honest and personal." Over the course of the ten tracks, the speed and energy intensify. The opening track, "The Devil's Own," hits the listener hard and fast, while "The Outspoken" takes a slower approach with heavy riffs and darker rhythms. Then, in "The Threshold of Hell," Moonspell's singer Fernando Ribiero brings a soothing touch with his deep voice, layered over impressive guitar harmonies that contrast with the fierce screams of Diva Satanica. I believe this is when the album really shines and explores their sound deeply. The title track "Sons of the Abandoned" is more aggressive than the earlier songs, as Satanica experiments with the contrast between hollow screams and melodic breaks. The riffs feature long, screeching solos and passages that seem influenced by 80's metal bands. Tracks like "No One Beats Death" and " Code Aeternam" feature more melodic passages and melancholic vocals, filled with rage and suffering. The guitars and drumming performances develop into headbanging exercises in restraint, as the tempo builds to an extreme finish. The album benefits from the inclusion of guest vocalists, such as on "The Path That Never Ends", which features the towering melodies of Burning Witches' Laura Guldemond, which helps smooth out the constant impassioned growls of Satanica.

The album features a calming three-minute instrumental, "The Night Before Dawn," which highlights the band's softer side and evokes music like a medieval banquet. The album wraps up with the sonic blasts of the Annihilator cover"Human Insecticide". Overall, I think Bloodhunter is a great addition to the Melodic Death Metal genre. They produce powerful riffs, passionate vocals, and catchy music. They're definitely a band to watch in the future.
